Day 9- “White torn Christmas Cards”

Today, as all NYers will attest to, there was snow… and snow, and snow, and yet more snow.
The accumulation was unimpressive, it’s been warm enough that a good part of it has been melting throughout the day. There’s about a half to a foot of accumulation now, and it has been that way since this morning. What was impressive however, was how much was falling- and for how long. Thick, big, heavy flakes blizzard-ing non-stop all day.
I almost became a real NYer today for two reasons: 1- I almost canceled my evening plans because I didn’t want to brave the weather and 2- I wished I had carried an umbrella to keep me dry (I had never seen people using umbrellas in the snow till I came to NY.)
I still went out, and despite looking like Frosty the snowman when I arrived at my destination, I had a great time. The umbrella, it turns out, might not be such a silly idea after all.
In trying to describe the snow, all that comes to mind is the words of Dylan Thomas, so instead of making you suffer through my own inferior version, I will quote him here (from a Child’s Christmas in Wales)
“”But that was not the same snow,” I say. “Our snow was not only shaken from white wash buckets down the sky, it came shawling out of the ground and swam and drifted out of the arms and hands and bodies of the trees; snow grew overnight on the roofs of the houses like a pure and grandfather moss, minutely -ivied the walls and settled on the postman, opening the gate, like a dumb, numb thunder-storm of white, torn Christmas cards.”
